Parkway Playhouse Junior Conservatory classes are exciting, engaging, and challenging. Courses from acting to improvisational performance, musical theater to drama, character development to comedy, and playwriting offer children and youth, ages 4 to 18, an opportunity to grow and excel.

Classes have been structured to nurture the intellectual, artistic and personal development of these young people through extraordinary theatre experiences. Teachers are qualified and vetted theater professionals who understand and enjoy working with young people.

The Conservatory will teach more than just acting. Students will learn to incorporate the craft of theater into their everyday lives, developing concentration, critical thinking skills, imagination, professionalism, character, and self-confidence.

Classes last one hour and will meet once a week from September through May of 2018 in both Burnsville and Spruce Pine.

Tues 4-5pm

Building on the foundation of voice, movement, character development, and storytelling through theatre, students will begin learning specific styles in acting. Preparing and performing both comedic and dramatic scenes, developing character monologues, and scoring their scripts are all techniques they will be well-versed in by the end of the class.

(ages 12-18)

Thurs 4-5pm
Kristen Livengood

The perfect opportunity to take improvisational theatre ALL YEAR LONG! This course will train students to be “in the moment” and spontaneous in the responses as it relates to improvisation. A key to good acting is really listening and reacting truthfully. There’s no better place to hone that skill than our weekly improv classes. This course is a prerequisite to be selected for Parkway’s invitation only improv troupe, “Get the Hook.”

(ages 13-18)

Mon 5:00-6:00pm
Jenny Martin

This advanced theatre class will explore methods and styles of acting, allowing students to hone their craft. Method acting vs. Meisner will be a piece of cake for students after taking this course. Students will engage in both contemporary and classical texts through prepping and performing scenes and monologues. Preparing audition pieces for college auditions or Main Stage productions will be a focus in this class as well.
