Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is showing here at Parkway Playhouse June 20-July 6, 2025. We reached out to actor Melanie Veazey, who is portraying Mrs. Wormwood, about her experience working on this production.

What’s your favorite part of this show and why?

I love performing in the opening number (Miracle) with all the kids and parents. To be the bad parent amongst all of the good ones is great fun.

What’s your favorite book and why?

I think I’ll go back to my childhood for this question and say The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I have such strong, vivid memories of reading this book, and the images that I created when I first read it still stick with me today. I even remember my mom going on a hunt for “Turkish delight” because of its role in the story, and I remember tasting it for the first time and thinking I had gone to heaven. Books are so magical. I loved every minute of being lost in the world of Narnia.

How excited are you to be working with this incredible cast?

How wonderful it’s been to be surrounded by so much talent. Every moment on stage is filled with joy and camaraderie, and that is the best formula for a successful show.

What have you loved about working on this production?

I have loved everything about this process so far. The director, cast, and crew are all top-notch. Everyone is working together to create something super special.

How did you get into theatre?

A long time ago, when I was very young, my grandparents thought it would be fun if I stood on the coffee table and sang along to “Fiddler on the Roof”. I was hooked and soon starred in my 4th grade production of Mary Poppins. I never looked back and have been singing and dancing for my entire life.

What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?

I actually love driving through town. Even when I don’t have to. There’s something so sweet and special about our town square. It always brings a smile to my face. There’s so much history and community here, and it’s so very evident in our beautiful town of Burnsville.

What have you loved so far about working with Parkway Playhouse?

The people. It is truly about the artists, performers, volunteers, staff, and board. We have all come together to create a theater experience that is special. A place that inspires the next generation to fall in love with theater the way we have.
