We’re so excited to be producing our Second Annual Appalachian Playwriting Festival on September 21-22, 2024! We reached out to Booth #99 playwright George Pfeffer to find out more about him and his script!

What is your connection to the Appalachian Region?

My wife and I have visited for many years and our kids went to camp near Brevard. We now live near Burnsville.

What does being Appalachian mean to you?

The location. The music! The geologic beauty. The abundance of flora and fauna. The stories and the often sly humor. Respect for those who have been here much longer. Appreciation of the eccentricities, contributions and development of the culture.

What inspired you to write your play?

I had a good time writing a couple of dinner theater murder mysteries for The Old Courthouse Theater in Concord, NC which were performed at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and wanted to tackle a full length play. I was inspired by the many festivals in the mountains: literary, musical, theatrical, arts & crafts. We had attended many of these in the past, and I wanted to highlight the quirkiness of both the event and the participants. I also enjoyed being in two plays at Parkway; this endeavor seemed a way to support the Playhouse.

What do you hope will stick with audiences after they watch the reading of your play?

Smiles! The long and evolving craft traditions in these mountains. The array of personalities, concerns, dreams and spirit of the people in the area.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

I’m a retired teacher of Chemistry (for many years) and Theater for about a decade. My wife and I try to keep a productive garden under control and have embarked on several new artistic pursuits.

Will you be joining us for the Appalachian Playwriting Festival?

We will be there, along with some of our friends.
