Bloodletting in These Hills is showing here at Parkway Playhouse August 1-10, 2025. We reached out to Jason A Phillips, who is portraying Quin,n about his experience working on this production.
What part of this show is your favorite and why?
I don’t want to give any spoilers, but that show has a dramatic ending that I think will be both exciting and challenging to play and intense for the audience.
What about this show do you think will stick with audiences?
I’d say the striking similarities of the workers’ struggle for good pay and working conditions from this time period and today are very striking. I also think the family relationships and the choices folks feel forced to make to keep their family safe will stick with folks.

You’re the first cast to perform in a fully staged production of this show. What has the process been like originating this role?
I love working on new plays. To get to dive into a new world and characters that have never been inhabited before gives you a world of exciting possibilities.
What have you loved so far about working with Parkway Playhouse?
I always enjoy working with the staff and creative teams out at Parkway Playhouse. They are amazing to work with and very kind. I also love the space; the theatre itself has such history that it’s a great place to perform.
How did you get into theatre?
I was a really shy kid/young adult, and I was drawn to theatre as a way to step out of my shyness and experience what it might be like to be someone else.

What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?
I’m a big fan of hiking in the Burnsville area, or on lazy days, taking a scenic drive.
Tell us about yourself!
I am originally from the east coast of Canada and came to WNC by way of Chicago. After almost 10 years in the area, I am struck by the similarities between WNC and Eastern Canada, the beauty of the landscape, and the close-knit communities. I have been doing theatre in some capacity for almost 40 years on and off. I find that stepping back from performing from time to time allows me to bring new perspectives and skills to my performances every time I come back. This is my 4th show at Parkway Playhouse, and I’m excited that my 5th show is right around the corner. I’ll be back in October for Arsenic and Old Lace! I tend to keep busy with theatre and improv, so in my free time I spend time with my family (Hi Cullen and Daphodil!) and read as much as I can between memorizing lines.
