Bloodletting in These Hills is showing here at Parkway Playhouse August 1-10, 2025. We reached out to Karen Covington-Yow, who is portraying Lillian, about her experience working on this production.
What part of this show is your favorite and why?
I like the relationship between the family members represented in this show. The family gets stronger and closer as times get tougher.
What about this show do you think will stick with audiences?
I think audiences will relate to the fact that this show takes place in Appalachia, and also how the story involves real-life events and how one family dealt with those events.
You’re the first cast to perform in a fully staged production of this show. What has the process been like originating this role?
I love performing in original projects, and I love discovering a character that nobody else has played before. I feel like it is freeing to not have barriers of previous performances, but also challenging to have no guidelines on how that character should be played.
What have you loved so far about working with Parkway Playhouse?
I always enjoy working with the Parkway Playhouse staff and my fellow actors, and I love the performing space because of its rich history.
How did you get into theatre?
I was born a performer! Seriously, I have been doing it since I was very young, so I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love performing, whether for my family, my pets, my stuffed animals, my schoolmates, or my neighborhood peeps. My Mom always joked that I could talk to a brick wall, and it’s kind of true. I don’t even need an audience to perform!
What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?
Well, Dollywood is only 2 hours away, and I love me some Dolly!
Tell us about yourself!
I have a wonderful husband named Mike (who is also in this show) and 2 spoiled kitty children named Khaleesi and Nymeria. I hail from Texas and moved to WNC in 2014. I retired from practicing law in 2001 and then focused my life on my passions as a professional actor, singer, and director.
