Vanities is opening here at Parkway Playhouse on September 6, 2024! We reached out to actor Lucy Hester to find out more about her and her experience working on this production.

What’s your favorite part of this show and why?

Being part of such a small cast allows us to really dive into the relationships between our characters. It wouldn’t be hard to play Kathy, Joanne, and Mary as one-dimensional, but we have been able to take a deeper look at these women and their lives. I’ve loved seeing how their friendship develops over the years, as well as the layers that my cast mates have brought to Kathy and Joanne.

What about this show do you think will stick with audiences?

A lot of the themes of this show – growing apart from close childhood friends, struggling to find a place for yourself in the world amid huge social upheavals – are very universal experiences. While our audience may not exactly LIKE Kathy, Joanne, and Mary all of the time, they will certainly see parts of themselves reflected in their stories.

How excited are you to be working with this incredible cast?

UN-believably!! These women are so talented and the rehearsal process with them has been a joy.

What have you loved about working on this production?

Our director Callista has done incredible work in helping us look beyond the surface level of this play. She has brought such a depth of wisdom to this show, and has challenged each of us to think in a different way about our characters. She has especially emphasized the very real friendship and love that exists between them – an element it is easy to forget as the play goes on.

How did you get into theatre?

One fine afternoon at age 7, I decided I was tired of ballet. Theatre seemed like the natural next step – and was MUCH more fun!

What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?

Living in Asheville, my favorite thing to do is take a walk through the NC Arboretum, followed by dinner at Nine Mile!

What have you loved so far about working with Parkway Playhouse?

Everyone at Parkway Playhouse is so passionate about what they do, and the theater itself is such a beautiful space! I feel very fortunate to be able to work with this wonderful group.
